I was born in Rumangabole on March 13, 1978. I am married to Julienne Ntanyungura with whom I have three children: two girls and a boy. In 2003 I applied to join the ICCN. Two months later, Muhindo Messi contacted me and told me when my training would start. We had a month of paramilitary training at Rumangabo patrol station then we carried out several patrols in the Nyamulagira sector. On one of these patrols our mission was to destroy charcoal furnaces. We walked for an hour and a half before we got to the edge of the undergrowth, at the beginning of the lava flow. There we found ourselves encircled by elements of the FDLR. These gangsters disarmed us and bound our hands. We were stripped and whipped and held for two hours. They told us not to return, saying that that part of the park was theirs and that we had no right to set foot in it. Then they returned our weapons and our clothes and told us to get out. As is true of so many things, these problems won’t go away unless we make them. That’s why we stay here and do this; why we love our job, and our park.
